Processing food donations makes it possible to put food that can feed our neighbors in their cupboards and keep it out of landfills. It's a double win!
Key Responsibilities: Check condition of donated items, including dates, to ensure safety of consumption. Sort and place checked items into the appropriate categories or boxes or bins. Packing food in boxes at specified weights and loading boxes onto pallets. Bagging produce, such as potatoes and apples, at specified weights. Break down cardboard for recycling and dispose of trash.Support/Training: Volunteers will be given instructions upon arrival, and will have staff support throughout their shift. Volunteer: Help at Child Care CenterMany non-direct care opportunities are present for volunteers at the Child Care Center including: reading to children, sanitizing toys, cleaning windows, grounds keeping, laundry, and many other "housekeeping" tasks. The Center follows the Ottumwa Community School District calendar and is therefore, closed on certain holidays, including Spring Break and Christmas Break. The Center is also not open during the summer months when school is not in session. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers must also be able to sign a volunteer waiver indicating they are free of communicable diseases and have no criminal or child abuse record.
