Who We Are

We provide comprehensive domestic abuse services to 12 counties in South Central Iowa. Our primary office is located in Wapello County. Professional advocates provide assistance to survivors of domestic abuse through assistance obtaining safe housing, court and restraining order assistance, financial education and advocacy, housing assistance and referral for any other needs that they may have. Advocates work closely with the Department of Human Services, substance abuse agencies, mental health providers and community based organizations to meet the many needs of survivors. In addition, advocates work on prevention activities to reduce domestic abuse through working with youth in a variety of settings. Advocates provide presentations to church and civic groups to provide community education and awareness of the issues surrounding domestic abuse. Advocates work with healthcare professionals in assisting in identifying victims that they serve as well as participate in community fairs and other community activities.

What We Do

The Crisis Center & Women's Shelter strives to support survivors of domestic violence through advocacy, education and collaboration with community service providers to help survivors achieve their goals, become self-sufficient, and obtain temporary or permanent safe housing.--History:In 1978, a group of concerned citizens recognized the need for a safe shelter for battered women and their children. The Adult Life/Family Crisis Center was founded in 1979. Later the name was changed to the Crisis Center and Women's Shelter. In 2013 the Crisis Center & Women's Shelter was designated the domestic abuse service provider to 11 counties. As we move forward we will be continuing to expand the services that we provide in our geographic area.
