Volunteer Job Description: Drive Thru Distribution
General Description:
Distribution is accomplished via a drive-thru model. A route is established in a parking lot whereby a client pulls up to a designated spot, one volunteer collects information while another volunteer places emergency food in the back or trunk of the client’s vehicle.
Key Responsibilities:
- Organize pre-packed boxes off the pallets on the ground and near the pick-up location
- Post signs in the parking lot to direct cars into an appropriate drive through line
- Stand in parking lot to direct cars
- Greet clients, ask them to open back or trunk, and note name, zip code, and number in the household
- Open the vehicle door and communicate number of households to other volunteers
- Place emergency food in back or trunk of vehicle while wearing sterile gloves
- Directing clients out of parking lot
Qualifications:
- Free of cough and fever and willing to wear sterile gloves if in contact with emergency food.
- Able to stand, move, bend, and lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
- Able to be on your feet and outside for 1-4 hours.
- Comfortable interacting with strangers.
- Able to commit to Food Bank of Iowa’s mission, vision, and values.
Roles for Volunteers:
- Organize emergency food at distribution site for loading.
- Direct cars through parking lot line for drive through model.
- Greet and take required information.
- Open and close vehicle doors.
- Load food in vehicle.
Safety:
- Clients do not get out of their vehicles.
- Volunteers do not enter a client vehicle.
- Volunteers take information and maintain control of pen and clipboard.
- Volunteers handling food must wear sanitary gloves and avoid touching anything else.
- Wear sterile gloves when handling emergency food boxes
- Use your legs and keep your back in a natural position while lifting.
- Always ask for a fellow volunteer to assist you if you find that items are too heavy.
- Don’t twist while carrying a load, instead shift your feet and take small steps in the direction you want to turn.
Attire:
- Appropriate casual attire is acceptable.
- Closed-toed shoes are required.
